Great comments Andrew and highlights that the question "'Why?" really helps us get to the core of the issue. AS the leadership guru Demming once said - you need to ask the question "Why?" 5 times to get to the real core of why you are going down a certain path.

I'm in the middle of reading a classic book on time management - "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and one of the chapters I just finished reading talks about the question Why? and how it is so important in the natural planning process. I remember back in Uni (not so long ago) doing group projects and there were definitely times when our group lacked clarity, lacked creative ideas and this all lead to a lack of motivation. The first thing to disappear was always our attention span. "Let's grab a coffee... that's what we need...." In hindsight, all we really needed was to ask the question WHY? Why are we trying to achieve X? This would have clarified our purpose, aligned boundaries and criteria and acted as a catalyst for creative ideas and action. I agree that we need to ask Why we are doing the things we doing? This will help us outline the relevance of the things we do and help us live a more fulfilling, simplified and purposeful life. Thoughts?
